Davis Masuda had a poster accepted for presentation at the spring annual meeting of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (http://www.aupha.org/).  The poster is one of 20 accepted and is entitled: "Moodling About:  Active Inquiry-Based Learning in Online Environments," and is a description of our use of an open-source Learning Management Systems (Moodle) to enable development of course design based on the AMIGO3 active-inquiry adult learning model.  For meeting details: http://www.aupha.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3807.

 

Barry Aaronson recently received word that his abstract, “Evaluation of an Electronic Early Warning System for the Detection of Critically Ill Hospital Patients,” has been accepted for poster presentation in the Research category at the Society of Hospital Medicine's Annual Meeting, April 3 - 5, 2008 in San Diego, California.

Jim Tufano recently received word from the 2008 HMO Research Network (HMORN) Conference planning committee that his abstract, “Providers' experience with an ICT-enabled organizational redesign initiative to promote patient-centered access,” was accepted for a poster presentation at the 14th Annual HMORN Conference – “Partnerships in Translation: Advancing Research and Clinical Care,” to be held April 13-16, 2008 at the Hilton, Minneapolis.

Peter Tarczy-Hornoch is part of a panel, "Instrumenting the Medical Enterprise for Discovery: Dissolving the Barriers between Clinical Care and Research," that is part of the American Medical Informatics Association's first annual Summit on Translational Bioinformatics in San Francisco from March 10-12, 2008.

Mark Minie has been awarded a $4,500.00 Friends of the Library Grant to develop a browser based BioToolBar for basic biology researchers here at UW and also a $30,000.00 contract to build a similar toolbar for the Health Sciences Libraries at Wyoming, Montana, Hawaii, Alaska, and Idaho.

Congratulations to Kent Unruh who successfully defended his doctoral dissertation (for the Information School) on Oct 18th titled "Information and the Cancer Experience: A Study of Patient Work During Cancer Care". His commitee was chaired by Wanda Pratt, and included Sherrylyne Fuller, David Levy, Raya Fidel and Julie Gralow.

Congratulations Wanda Pratt & Cathy Blake PDF Print E-mail
Catherine Blake and Wanda Pratt have won the best paper of the year award for their 2-part paper on Collaborative Information Synthesis from the Journal of the American Society for Information Science & Technology (JASIS&T). The award consists of a $1,500 cash award sponsored by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Additionally, John Wiley & Sons shall contribute $500 towards travel or other expenses to the grant recipient. To quote from the award letter:

 

Blake and Pratt's beautifully crafted two-part article is an exemplary study about the collaborative information synthesis process...   The robust evidence-based results serve as a highly constructive model for designers of medical and health information systems. Thus the jury believes that Blake and Pratt's work is highly relevant and contributes significantly to the field of information science theoretically and empirically and therefore is most worthy of the 2006 JASIST John Wiley & Sons Best Paper Award.

We invite you to participate in PHI2007: Creating a Global Partnership in Public Health Informatics.  The goal of this conference is to create a partnership of individuals, organizations and research centers to define and develop a vision for coherence and a framework for addressing strategic health information issues and requirements to drive successful global population health interventions.  The conferences overarching themes will be standards for interoperability; data collection and data sharing; and education and training. Alumni News: Sandra Johnston, PhD PDF Print E-mail
Sandra Johnston, PhD (recent postdoc on NLM training grant) has accepted a position at the University of Washington, Department of Neurology as a Data/Informatics Manager. This position will work with the neuro-oncology research program to develop and manage data sets, conduct statistical analysis, and research conduct.
